Rob Mills
Rob Mills Director & CEO

A Life In a Day.

I have worked in sport and entertainment related industries for over 20 years. By virtue of the different roles I have held in this period I have worked across the key components of sport and entertainment – consumers, sponsors, venues, broadcast and rights holders. Before Gemba I worked for a sports and entertainment publishing business before spending almost ten years working in the sporting goods industry. I love the pace and rate of change in the industry, the opportunity to do things differently and challenge the status quo. Recent sport and entertainment highlights for me include watching the Fed Express come back from match points to win at the US Open and being blown away by Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Vedder singing Highway to Hell at a recent gig.

Life at gemba.

I am fortunate that my position gives me visibility across the whole world of Gemba. I work with teams that are delivering Insights, Strategy and Communications to both brands and rights holders. As the Director responsible for our international business I also get to work on projects across a diverse range of markets. I am passionate about helping to build a business that can positively shape the sport and entertainment industry (and have some fun doing it!)

I have written, created and produced a wide range of diverse creative products... from live events to animated pilots, from childrens’ books to broadcast TV, from feature films to consumer promotions. Paula Marovitch
Paula Marovitch Management Accountant

A Life In a Day.

I’ve worked in the advertising and marketing industry over the last 15 years in the finance department for both global agencies and small boutique marketing firms, and love the diversity of the roles and amazing people I've worked with.

It’s a fun and interesting industry, and my time at Gemba has been rewarding and challenging. I love the ever-changing playing field of the Gemba business combined with the structure of finance and accounting – it’s a perfect combination to keep me inspired. I’ve been fortunate to have experienced many great changes over my 10 years at Gemba and love that the business is always evolving and growing to be better and embraces change. It’s never a dull moment at the office with so much going on with each division, and the Leadership Teams desire for continual improvement provides the perfect opportunity to be proactive and make the changes to improve systems and processes. I’m very lucky to have the perfect work life balance working part time as the Management Accountant – it’s a lot of fun at Gemba!

Life at gemba.

I started with Gemba way back in 2004 and have been privileged to have experience the evolution of the business from an amazingly dedicated small team to a highly talented and professional global business. I’ve had a number of roles within the business over my tenure from the first senior bookkeeper of the business to the finance manager until going on maternity leave. My current role as the management accountant focuses on providing key metrics to the Leadership Team. I report to the Head of Finance and work closely with the leadership team. I am responsible for the Practice Management side of the business including burn reports, project analysis and staff billability. I also work closely with the Comms and Creative teams on the activation reconciliations for our major clients including Toyota and Foxtel. One of the highlights of my role have been the implementation of a new financial system into the business back in 2013 which was challenging, and has ensured the finance team is supporting the rest of the business as it grows its global and local offering.

On a macro level, I collaborate with the Leadership Team to ensure our HR strategy is current and meaningful. On a micro level, I am responsible for recruitment, induction, training and development, employee engagement, P&P development and everything in between. Essentially anything to do with our employees and the culture we build here.

A Life In a Day.

I grew up on Dairy Farm near Echuca and was kept busy playing lots of sport, swimming, studying and teaching Ballet, playing the piano (and briefly, the drums!), riding horses and the odd ‘PeeWee 50’.

I've been at Gemba for 7 years and time flies when you’re having fun! It’s been a great ride so far and just gets better and better.

Life at gemba.

My role at Gemba started as Executive Assistant to Rob, Ben and James and as the Office Manager. I now work in the Ideas team as an Account Executive, mainly on the Toyota Account. I have to pinch myself all the time as I get to work within AFL and Ironman.

Cricket, however is my first love, ‘Lillie’s pounding down like a machine.....’ and as luck would have it, Toyota sponsors cricket as well – happy days!

Richard Howarth
Richard Howarth General Manager – New Zealand

A Life In a Day.

I have experience on both sides of the sports and entertainment strategy and marketing equation, having operated as a rights holder and for a global corporate brand. I moved to New Zealand from the UK in 2004, so have a variety of experience in both Europe and Australasia. Prior to joining Gemba in 2010, I was Head of Sponsorship at Vodafone NZ and managed a diverse portfolio of music and sports partnerships. During that period, the sponsorship team was acknowledged twice with the awarding of ‘Best Sponsorship’ at the Telco's Global Brand Awards. Firstly, for an integrated music strategy, and then a year later for Vodafone One Tribe, a unique sports fan community that leverages the partnership with the NZ Warriors Rugby League club. The sponsorship team was also recognised by the New Zealand industry with their highest honour, the ‘Supreme Award’ at the National Sponsorship Awards. Earlier in my career in the UK, I managed the commercial relationships for Professional Footballers such as England captains Alan Shearer, David Beckham, Michael Owen and Rio Ferdinand. I then moved to New Zealand to run the commercial departments for New Zealand’s professional sporting franchises in Football and Rugby League, initially the A-League’s New Zealand Knights, then the NRL’s Warriors.

Life at gemba.

My role here is to lead the business in the New Zealand market; develop strong relationships with both rights holders and brands to understand their objectives and key challenges; and ensure our Gemba research products and intellectual capital continues to be market leading and are appropriate and relevant to the local market.

A Life In a Day.

I started out in advertising but discovered I preferred interacting with consumers through their passion points such as music rather than less interactive mediums such as print and TV. I moved into a dynamic role in entertainment sponsorship working with properties such as Big Day Out and ARIA to activate brands like Tooheys Extra Dry, Bacardi and V Energy Drink. My passion for music helped create unique music strategies for these brands. After three years of festival tours I was used to no sleep so I moved to the city that never sleeps, NYC where I helped world renowned agency Mother start up an experiential division. Highlights included setting up the Virgin Mobile Festival in the USA, trying to get permission for Richard Branson to jump out of a helicopter and travelling to over 35 cities on the Britney Spears tour. I’m thrilled to be back in Melbourne sharing my entertainment experiences with gemba, while they teach me more about sport including how to dodge a footy in the head during office kick to kick!

Life at gemba.

I spent my first few years at gemba leading the activation account management team in bringing to life strategies and creative for clients like Toyota, Telstra, Coke and Renegades. After maternity leave I’ve returned to work three days, working on internal operations – ensuring the team is functioning at its best to deliver world class work that makes a difference to our clients’ businesses. This includes managing resources, training and development, process management and when I’m lucky some client work too.

A Life In a Day.

I’ve worked across the sports and recreation industry for over 10 years, specifically in the area of venue and facility planning, development and management. My roles have included sport and recreation facility management in local government, project management for the London Fire Brigade, and I have spent the last 6 years as a consultant specialising in venue and facility development.

I’m very passionate about sport, entertainment and lifestyle, especially water-skiing/wakeboarding, as well as music gigs and festivals. In summer, we spend a fair amount of time up at my home town of Boort for water-skiing. Most other weekends, you’ll see Jas, Willow and I staying local in Elwood grabbing a coffee and spending time at the beach.

I believe that I’m one of the lucky ones whose passion’s directly align with the work that I do and I hope that never changes.

I joined gemba in January 2012 to head up a new Venues & Facilities division. My role is to lead and grow the Venues & Facilities division and service offer in areas of strategy and master planning, economic feasibility assessment, business case development, funding and investment, business planning and commercialisation.

We work with clients such as venue and facility operators, local and state governments, and various peak sporting bodies, to plan and develop stadia, high performance and grass roots facilities. As examples, some of our recent projects include assisting the NRL with a Centre of Excellence program including multiple feasibility studies for NRL clubs, a business case for a National Home of Skateboarding on the Gold Coast, and a master plan for the WACA Ground in Perth.

I have been fortunate that I’ve had the opportunity to see many great projects evolve from concept through design, construction and into live operation.

I believe that sport and recreation is a powerful tool in engaging communities and supporting personal development, and I am definitely looking forward to seeing my children involved and participating in sport. My best playing days are definitely behind me and I now spend most weekends pushing a swing, bike or scooter.

Life at gemba.

I started my career over ten years ago at Saatchi & Saatchi Sydney as an Account Co-ordinator on the David Jones account. Working on a fast-moving retail account put me in good stead for a long career in advertising. I further my advertising career at EHS Brann (London), Ogilvy (Wellington) and Publicis Mojo (Sydney) on a range of accounts such as Qantas, Hahn Superdry, CommSec and Ministry for the Environment (NZ). In these roles, I loved working with brands to identify issues and help to solve them through marketing and communication, and building strong partnerships with my clients.

Sport has long been a passion of mine, and a week wouldn’t be complete without a game of netball or basketball. I was lucky enough to represent New Zealand at the 2009 and 2013 Women’s Lacrosse World Cups, which were definitely a major achievement in my life. A desire to bring together my comms experience with my passion for sport and entertainment, found me in my perfect role at Gemba!

Life at gemba.

My key responsibility as Account Director is to ensure that the Account Management team deliver work of a consistently high standard to clients (such as Toyota and Foxtel) in the sponsorship space. I love the variety of work we deliver – from grassroots football and netball academies for Foxtel to major consumer promotions for Toyota. We have a great team of Account Managers, Executives and Co-ordinators in Sydney and Melbourne who bring passion, dedication and discipline to their work every day. It’s a great place to work.

Both these jobs let me focus on skills in relation to sponsorship and events specifically. So wanting to combine both my events and sponsorship experience, with an agency that focused purely on sport and entertainment seemed like the perfect next step for me.

A Life In a Day.

For as long as I can remember I’ve been passionate about sport. This led me to AUT University, where I completed a Bachelor of Business conjoint with Sport and Recreation majoring in Marketing and Management respectively.

I have experienced various aspects of the sports industry through work experience with the New Zealand Netball & Cricket Players Associations, the Auckland Rugby Union and the Blues Super Rugby franchise. After a Gemba presentation at university outlining their work within the industry for brands such as the Melbourne Storm, NZ Breakers and corporates involved in sport, I had to get on board! Entering my fourth year of university I joined the Gemba family part-time. In 2013 I began full-time work as a Sport and Entertainment Analyst, which means I got to work across the full spectrum of our project types.

Recently I got into Snowboarding and have done a few trips to Ruapehu! I’m a huge Rugby Union and Basketball fan. A diet of the All Blacks, Blues, Auckland Rugby, NZ Breakers and OKC Thunder (even before Steven Adams!) keeps me satisfied. I also like to keep a healthy supply of recent release movies from Sky TV saved. That lets me watch one whenever I’m feeling it.

Life at gemba.

As a Sport and Entertainment Analyst, I assist in building brand and rights holder partnership strategies for both corporates and rights holders, helping them to maximise their investments in the sport and entertainment industry. I was also crowned one half of the most consistent professional creative team (under 30 of course) by international awards program Young Glory. But best of all, I made the move to Melbourne and now bring creative ideas to life at Turnstile 4.

A Life In a Day.

I joined gemba as an Intern in early 2013 and have gone on to take up a part-time Analyst role within the Entertainment Strategy team whilst completing my Master’s. Working at gemba has allowed me to apply my long held passion for all things sport into a professional context whilst building upon a lot of the skills that I am developing at university. Coming from a healthcare background, I am really interested in understanding the role that sport can play in broader societal health issues such as obesity. I believe that sport’s ability to transcend all facets of society makes it an ideal vehicle in promoting healthy lifestyles for everyone. I am also a long-suffering Richmond fan and a newly suffering fan of both the Warriors and Knicks in the NBA.

Life at gemba.

As an Analyst in the Strategy team, I work across both Core Strategy and Venues & Facilities projects which provides me with an enormous variety to my work. By way of example, the diversity of some of the things I’ve done so far include assisting in the development of strategic plans, creating a heat map of a club’s membership base and performing extensive benchmarking studies of the junior participation landscape in Australia.

A Life In a Day.

Having finished my Undergraduate and Honours degrees, my venture into the sports industry started when I got the opportunity to undertake a PhD in Sports Marketing. My PhD research was based on understanding the role of digital media in fan engagement and development for sports organisations. During my PhD, I also worked as a research and strategy consultant for many national sports organisations and their affiliated teams, including the AFL, Big Bash League, A-League, SACA, Super Rugby and Netball Australia.

I am a massive sports and entertainment fan and participant, and following the completion of my studies, I wanted to continue my work within the sports and entertainment industry. Having met a lot of sports business administrators during my time consulting, it was made clear to me that gemba was the place to be. The rest is history!

Life at gemba.

Being in the Insights Department at gemba gives me a fantastic opportunity to use my research skills and apply them to problems faced by sports and entertainment bodies both in Australia, and abroad. In particular, the Insights Department works with rights holders and brands to understand who, how and why people engage with sports and entertainment – whether that be from a spectator or participant perspective – with the goal of providing meaningful insights for business strategy.

Besides the fascinating and challenging work, gemba is made up of a fantastic group of people that drive a friendly, social, dynamic and collaborative culture. The days are constantly full of conversations and discussions about each other’s work with everyone always keen to throw around ideas.

I joined the Gemba in June 2014, to project manage Foxtel’s sponsorship activations within V8 Supercars, following the announcement that Foxtel would be the official broadcast partner of the series from 2015.

My role can sometimes look like a scene from “Pimp My Ride” with the Foxtel ute customisation, “Australia’s Next Top Model” as we cast for promotional models to work at the race track or even “House of Cards” as I balance the needs of multiple stakeholders all really excited about the new partnership with V8 Supercars – it all depends on the day of the week.

After completing my degree, my first job in New Zealand was with Nielsen Media analysing television and readership data for advertising agencies, broadcasters and publishers. I decided to try my luck in the UK and having intended to go for five years, I spent a total of 18 years in London.

During this time in London I set up and ran the research division for sports and entertainment companies International Management Group (IMG) and Trans World International (TWI), as well as their interactive division. I then worked for two market research companies, iBurbia and TNS UK, before the call of sports research came again, moving to Comperio Research and then Repucom UK.

I returned to New Zealand in 2011 and took up the position of Market Research Specialist at Vodafone NZ.
